The Elgin Police Department announces that Rave Alert/Smart911 is now available to all residents, taking the place of CodeRED, our former alerting system. Rave Alert/Smart911 enables registered users to receive timely and actionable emergency alerts. This is a free subscriber-based service that provides messages sent by us to your email address, or via text or voice message to cell phones. The goal is to keep residents and travelers informed of potentially hazardous situations involving weather, street cautions, and other emergencies. Subscribers can also identify when and how they are alerted and communicated with before, during, and after emergencies. If you were a prior CodeRED subscriber, you will need to re-register for Elgin notifications by visiting www.cityofelgin.org/alert.
“Rave Alert/Smart911 enables authorities to notify the community in real time,” said Chief Jeffrey Swoboda. “This service allows for critical communication with the public and provides individuals with the information needed to stay safe or take precautions during hazardous or emergency situations. Both residents and first responders will be better informed in an emergency situation. We encourage all members of our community to sign up for Rave Alert/Smart911 in order to be better prepared should an emergency occur.”
Not only can the Elgin Police Department provide information, but at the option and discretion of subscribers, they can, too. Subscribers may make available key family and residential information to the private and secure Rave Alert/Smart911 database. Once entered, the data may only be used for emergency responses, and is only made available to the 9-1-1 system in the event of an emergency. Options include sharing names, physical descriptions and photos of household members to aid responders during an emergency. Users can also list medical information, vehicles, emergency contacts and property details. As mobile phones do not provide an address for the caller when 9-1-1 is dialed, this may assist in rendering a response quicker should a caller be unable to provide an address. Not only is this information available to the Elgin 9-1-1 operator, but it is available to any Rave Alert/Smart911 subscribing 9-1-1 center across the country.
